The Pier Restoration Corp. has decided to concentrate on two new alternatives to repair the Santa Monica Pier, damaged in the winter storms of 1983. The alternatives replace two rejected proposals that would have cost $15 million.
The corporation, a nonprofit concern formed by City of Santa Monica to repair and maintain the pier, will submit a repair proposal to the City Council.
The first alternative, estimated to cost $10.2 million, calls for repairing 900 feet of the existing breakwater and extending it 300 feet to the south; reconstructing the end of the pier in concrete with a detached lower deck and overall strengthening. The corporation said the work would take six to eight months.
The second alternative, estimated at $11.3 million, calls for rebuilding the end of the pier in concrete with a detached lower deck and reconstructing 100,000 square feet of the west end of the pier in concrete. The corporation estimated that this would take eight to 10 months.
