Bayonet Downgraded as a Weapon of War
From Reuters
ROME —
The bayonet, used on battlefields for centuries, can no longer be considered a weapon of war, Italy’s supreme court ruled Friday.
The court rejected demands by the Venice public prosecutor that a Padua man found in possession of a bayonet should receive the severest penalties under Italian law for illegal possession of “battlefield weapons.”
Delivering its judgment, the court said modern techniques and technology had rendered obsolete the use of the bayonet in favor of more powerful means of mass warfare.
