Dr. Harold W. Sorenson, a professor of engineering sciences at UC San Diego, will become the Air Force’s new chief scientist this summer, the Pentagon said Friday.

Sorenson will replace Dr. Allen R. Stubberud, who is leaving to return to teaching at UC Irvine.

Sorenson is a member of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board as well as the Advisory Committee of the National Science Foundation. He has been a professor since 1968 and was the president and co-founder of the Orincon Corp., a consulting firm in La Jolla.
