Brink Hurls USC Past UCLA, 5-2
Brad Brink limited UCLA to seven hits and two runs in eight innings Saturday as USC won, 5-2, in a Pacific 10 Southern Division baseball game at Dedeaux Field.
Brink, a sophomore right-hander, walked two and struck out five before being relieved by Steve Bast at the start of the ninth.
The Trojans scored three runs in the first inning. Kevin Janik led off with a double, and Dan Henley singled, putting runners on first and third. Jeff Wetherby then reached base on a fielder’s choice, Janik scoring. Paul Fuller followed with a run-scoring single, and one out later, Ken Housley singled in the third run.
USC (7-5 overall) made it 4-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Pops Mitchell, and went ahead, 5-0, in the sixth on an error by UCLA second baseman Torey Lovullo.
The Bruins scored both of their runs in the eighth on a single by John Barry, a walk to Lovullo and a two-out, two-run double by John Joslyn.
Both teams are 1-1 in conference play. UCLA (10-4 overall) won the series opener, 5-4, Friday. The teams will play again today at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
