Land-Short China to Require Cremation

PEKING —
China’s government said today it will ban most burials and require cremation of the dead in an effort to save valuable land in the world’s most populous country.
Cremation has been required in cities and some rural areas since the mid-1950s, but graveyards and burial mounds are a common sight in the vast Chinese countryside, where 80% of the 1.03 billion population lives.
