Orange County businessman W. Patrick Moriarty, accused of fraud and racketeering charges in the licensing of a City of Commerce poker club, asked that his public corruption trial be moved from Los Angeles because of pretrial publicity. The motion for a change of venue was filed by Moriarty’s attorney, Jan Lawrence Handzlik, a day before the scheduled opening of Moriarty’s trial. Jury selection is set to begin today in the case, and Handzlik said he does not anticipate any decision on the request until questioning of prospective jurors has been completed.
