Economy Panel Member Quits

WASHINGTON — William Niskanen, who had hoped to be named chairman of the President’s long-dormant Council of Economic Advisers, resigned from the council today, effective March 31.
President Reagan named Treasury Under Secretary Beryl Sprinkel to the chairmanship last week, although Niskanen had been candid in saying he wanted the post. Former Chairman Martin Feldstein resigned last July, and the three-member panel’s other member, William Poole, resigned earlier this year.
