California led the nation in new businesses in 1984.

It was the second year in a row that California ranked No. 1 in the country for industrial growth, with 415 businesses either moving to the state or expanding existing operations in 1984. Texas was No. 2, with 254 new or expanded businesses, followed by Florida, Alabama and New York, according to a list published by Industrial Development magazine. California had 343 announced expansions and 72 new facility locations that will pump an estimated $2.8 billion into the state this year and generate about 108,800 jobs, according to the California Department of Commerce.
