Spring Training Roundup : Sconiers Remains Missing; the Angels Remain Puzzled

On Day 4 of Daryl Sconiers’ absence from the Angels’ camp at Mesa, Ariz., General Manager Mike Port said: “We’ll probably find Amelia Earhart before we find Daryl Sconiers.”

There was no new information Monday as to the whereabouts of the first baseman. He is being fined $245 for every missed workout and is now up to $980.

His attorney, Nick Lamprose of San Jose, said that conversations with Sconiers’ mother and wife Sunday night left him convinced that Sconiers was planning to report Monday at the latest.

“I’m obviously concerned,” Lamprose said. “I don’t know what to think. I talked to him on Wednesday of last week, and he was ready to go. All I can do is wait here and hope he calls.”

Sconiers called the Angels’ Thursday and said he would report Sunday.

“There’s nothing we can do until we hear from him,” Port said. “We’re willing to help if he needs it, but I’ve got to assume he just doesn’t want to be here.”
