U.S. Olympic pistol shooting coach Dan Iuga, who defected from Romania in 1981, began a hunger strike to protest his native country’s refusal to grant exit visas to his wife and two daughters. Iuga’s wife, Nina, who has been trying to join her husband in Corona for four years, telephoned him from Bucharest to say she had gone on a hunger strike in a last-ditch effort to win freedom. Iuga said he had no choice but to join her in the protest, which both vowed will continue until the Romanian government relents.
