Clerk Kills Fellow Worker, Wounds Two in Shooting Spree at Atlanta Post Office : Clerk Kills Man, Wounds 2 in Post Office Shooting

A postal clerk opened fire with a handgun Wednesday in a mail-sorting area of the main Atlanta post office, killing a fellow employee and wounding two others, authorities said.

The gunman was subdued by other workers, postal officials said. Atlanta Postmaster William G. Hanna identified him as Steven W. Brownlee, who had worked for the service for 12 years.

Brownlee, 30, was charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault, a police spokesman said.

“We haven’t established any kind of motive yet,” said Atlanta Police Lt. B. L. Neikirk. “We don’t know if these were targeted people or if he was simply shooting at random and they got in the path of the projectiles.”

Philip T. Sciarrone, 32, of Atlanta, an eight-year postal veteran, died in the shooting, said postal spokeswoman Kay Loggins.

Warren Bailey, 45, of Marietta, one of the wounded men, was declared brain dead about three hours later but was being kept alive by machine. The third man, Douglas M. Adams, 42, of Woodstock, was listed in stable condition.
