Britain will seek compensation from Libya on behalf of the family of policewoman Yvonne Fletcher, killed by shots from the Libyan Embassy in London last April, British sources said Thursday.

The claim will be filed through Italy, which has represented British interests in Libya since Britain broke off diplomatic relations over the incident, they added.

Britain gave Libya notice of the claim, details of which still have to be worked out, during talks between officials in Rome on Tuesday. The meeting was requested by Libya and sponsored by Italy.

Libya has never accepted responsibility for the death of the policewoman, who was on duty outside the embassy during a demonstration by opponents of Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi when the shots were fired.
