Former Rep. John M. Murphy, convicted in the FBI’s Abscam probe, was released on parole Wednesday after serving 20 months of a three-year sentence.

Murphy, a New York Democrat who was a veteran of 18 years in the House, was found guilty in December, 1980, of conspiracy and of accepting an unlawful gratuity.

He was among six congressmen and one senator convicted on various charges stemming from an undercover investigation, code-named Abscam, by federal agents who posed as representatives of wealthy Arabs seeking to bribe government officials.
