Mother of William Buckley and Former Sen. James Buckley Dies

Aloise Buckley, mother of 10 children who include a U.S. senator and a nationally known writer and commentator, has died after a lengthy illness, a family member said. She was 89.

Mrs. Buckley, who died Sunday at Sharon Hospital, had a long history of heart illness and had entered the hospital in early February because of pneumonia, said Priscilla L. Buckley, a daughter.

Mrs. Buckley, a native of New Orleans who married William F. Buckley in 1917, was largely responsible for raising their 10 children while her husband attended to oil business in foreign countries. He died in 1958.

In addition to her sons, William, editor of the National Review, and James, a former U.S. senator from New York, and daughter, Priscilla, Mrs. Buckley is survived by another son, F. Reid of Camden, S.C., and daughters Jane Buckley Smith of Sharon; Patricia B. Bozell of Washington, and Carol B. Learsy of New York. Her other children preceded her in death.

Mrs. Buckley also is survived by a brother, James E. Steiner of New Orleans, 50 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
