Airport Department to Close Westside Flyaway Bus Service
The city Department of Airports will discontinue its West Los Angeles Flyaway bus service to Los Angeles International Airport on Friday because of insufficient ridership.
The Flyaway has provided transportation to the airport for $3.25, considerably less than cab fare. The Westside Flyaway has attracted only about 337 riders a day, compared to 1,853 from the San Fernando Flyaway near Van Nuys Airport, according to department spokesman Jack Francois.
The Westside facility does not provide long-term parking as does the valley site, Francois said. Westside customers had to be dropped off at the Flyaway, while those in the valley can park their cars for as long as 15 days.
The Westside Flyaway was established 3 1/2 years ago to help ease congestion at the airport during a major reconstruction project, Francois said.
Now that the construction has been completed, and the department’s lease for the Sepulveda site is about to expire, the Flyaway will be closed. The land is owned by the federal government, which plans to sell it as surplus property, Francois said.
