Justice Powell Enters Hospital but May Be Back on Bench Soon
Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell, recuperating from surgery performed Jan. 4 for a cancerous prostate gland, has been admitted to the Bethesda Naval Medical Center, a court spokeswoman said Friday.
Powell, 77, entered the hospital Thursday “for a re-evaluation of his post-operative therapy,” Toni House, the court’s public information officer, said.
House added: “That evaluation has been satisfactorily completed, and the justice may take part in some of the March argument sessions. He is expected to return home tomorrow.”
Powell’s secretary, Sally Smith, said earlier this week that the justice has been preparing for the 24 cases to be argued this month. But she could not say whether Powell would return to the bench Monday.
