SCHUMANN: “KREISLERIANA”; GLINKA: F-MINOR NOCTURNE, VARIATIONS ON “THE NIGHTINGALE.” Regina Shamvili, pianist. Klavier Records KD7029 (9700 Glenoaks Blvd., Sun Valley, Calif. 91352). Born in Tbilisi, Soviet Georgia, and now a resident of New York, Shamvili has yet to become a household name. If the fickle, hype-dominated world of music moved with any logic, this record would change that instantly. Unlike too many of her contemporaries, Shamvili, 40, does not fear the expressive indulgences of the romantic spirit. Her playing reveals an impeccable technique at the service of extraordinary interpretive breadth, originality and dynamic fervor. She invariably finds and respects the elusive line that separates illumination and distortion. This is sensitive, authoritative playing of the old Russian school, the sort that makes even the banal sound poetic and the bombastic ardent.
