An 18-month-old Lancaster boy, left alone for five minutes by his aunt, apparently drowned in rainwater that had accumulated on the cover of an above-ground pool in the backyard Saturday, authorities said.

Steven Troth was found on a plastic cover over the backyard pool by his 13-year-old aunt at 1:50 p.m., Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Ford said. He was rushed by paramedics to Antelope Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3 p.m.

Steven, son of Wendy Hymen, 20, was being cared for by his aunt at 44200 N. Gingham Ave. She left the room for five minutes and returned to find the sliding glass door open, Ford said. She then found the boy atop the pool cover.
