Archbishop Appointed for Catholics Tied to Military

NEW YORK —
Archbishop Joseph T. Ryan, formerly of Alaska, has been named archbishop of the 2.1 million Roman Catholics connected with the U.S. military, church officials said Saturday. Pope John Paul II, in appointing Ryan, also elevated the Military Vicariate into an archdiocese.
