Specialists said Saturday that Siamese twin girls born with one body cannot be separated by surgery because they share several crucial organs, but the infants show two distinct personalities.

The specialists, who would not speculate on the chances of saving both twins, released details on tests conducted on the girls, named Elizabeth and Rebecca, who were born Thursday. They were listed in stable condition under tight security at Willis-Knighton Medical Center.

“According to pediatric neurologists, the twins have entirely separate nervous systems,” hospital spokeswoman Linda Wilson said. “They show signs of individual personalities.”
