Demolition is under way on the historic Buffums department store in downtown Long Beach, and construction is expected to begin in August on two six-story office buildings with a courtyard restaurant on the two-acre site..

Industrial Development Management Corp. (IDM) of Long Beach plans to build the 200,000-square-foot project and five-level parking garage at a total cost of about $42.4 million. The site is the northeast corner of Pine Avenue and Broadway, where Buffums, a chain of 15 department stores, maintained a store for 63 years.

In a March 17 story, Investment Development Management Corp. (IDM) of Long Beach was incorrectly referred to as Industrial Development Management Corp.

The old building, in the heart of the downtown redevelopment area, was put on the market in 1982, when Buffums moved to the Long Beach Plaza mall. Completion is scheduled in July, 1986.
