Near-Miss

Share

Among those thankful for a near-miss in last week’s crash of a Navy jet in Sorrento Valley is former UC San Diego Chancellor William D. McElroy, who sits on the board of two nearby firms--Foundation for the Ocean and Analytical Luminescence.

Other board members include businessmen Robert O. Peterson and Richard T. Silberman, contractor Robert Golden, and McElroy’s wife, Marlene Anderegg, a noted biochemist.

Despite his ivy-towered career, McElroy’s response when informed of the plane crash was that of a businessman: “I hope the Navy has good insurance.”

Off-Air Action

Former KPBS-TV newsman Ken Kramer is trying to secure funding for his new brainchild, a television magazine called “About San Diego.”

He’s making the rounds of advertising and business executives to find sponsors. Total cost for 12, half-hour programs: just shy of $300,000.

Legal Luminary

William P. Clark, President Reagan’s former Secretary of the Interior, has joined the Rogers & Wells law firm.

Although Clark, a former California Supreme Court justice, will work mostly out of Washington and Los Angeles, local Rogers & Wells managing partner Mitchell L. Lathrop promises that Clark will make “periodic visits” to San Diego.

Occasional visits also are made here by another former Republican of note: former Secretary of State William P. Rogers, the law firm’s namesake.
