U.S. and Soviet arms control negotiators met for two hours today and agreed to split into separate negotiating teams next week to discuss space, strategic and medium-range weapons.

“We have agreed that negotiating groups will begin their work on Tuesday, March 26,” a short statement from the U.S. delegation said.

Today’s meeting was the fourth session of the new round of superpower talks and was attended by all three senior arms negotiators on both sides.

Chief Soviet negotiator Viktor Karpov, asked after the meeting whether the talks were going well, shrugged and said: “We’re talking. That’s important.”

“You see, we’re talking, that’s all,” he repeated before getting into his limousine and driving away from the U.S. delegation building.
