Ex-German Politician Held in Gem Robbery

BADEN-BADEN, West Germany —
A former politician has been charged with stealing $730,000 worth of jewelry and pistol-whipping two witnesses, the prosecutor of Baden-Baden said.
Hans-Otto Scholl, 52, was charged Wednesday with robbery and assault in connection with a Dec. 18, 1984, holdup of a jewelry store in this spa town.
Scholl, 51, was regional chairman of the centrist Free Democratic Party in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate from 1974 to October, 1981. He also served as party whip from 1982 to March, 1983.
