The Region : State to Buy Downtown L.A. Prison Site
The state is near agreement on the purchase of 8.2 acres for a new prison in a heavily industrial area in downtown Los Angeles, a few miles southeast of the Civic Center, according to a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections. Crown Coach International, the firm that owns the property, expects “to make a deal with the state at any time,” a company official said. Plans call for a 1,750-inmate facility several stories high near 12th Street and Santa Fe Avenue. It would include a 1,000-bed reception center for newly sentenced prisoners and a 750-bed prison for longer-term inmates.
