Two UCLA engineering professors, Eliezer Gafni and Kenneth W. Martin, have been named winners of the Presidential Young Investigator Awards by the White House and the National Science Foundation.

The prizes are conferred on promising young faculty members in engineering and the sciences to help universities retain Ph.D. graduates who are being recruited by industry.

Gafni and Martin will each receive a grant of $25,000 a year for five years, plus a National Science Foundation pledge of up to $37,500 a year to match research grants from industry.
