President Reagan said today that he is willing to meet with new Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev in New York when the U.N. General Assembly convenes in September “if it’s convenient for him.”

Reagan was asked at a breakfast session with a group of reporters whether he would see Gorbachev in New York, and replied:

“If it’s convenient for him, I see no reason why it wouldn’t be for us. It’s up to him.”

In a personal message to Gorbachev, hand delivered by Vice President George Bush at the time of the funeral of Konstantin U. Chernenko, Reagan suggested a summit meeting in the United States.
