Speedier Start Voted for New GI Benefits

WASHINGTON —
The House voted Monday to speed the start of a new educational benefit program for members of the armed forces.
The New GI Bill Amendments of 1985, approved by voice vote, would make the benefits available immediately, instead of on July 1, as now scheduled. The bill will be sent to the Senate.
Under the program, recruits who give up $1,200 in pay during their first year may, after three years, draw $300 a month for 36 months.
