‘POSTCARD FROM A JOURNEY’
Poland, 1983, 84 minutes. 12:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. In his feature film debut writer-director Waldemar Dziki, not yet 30, accomplishes an awesome feat of the imagination, bringing alive a Polish-Jewish ghetto whose rapidly diminishing citizenry faces deportation to concentration camps. In this bleak, shadowy world, Dziki, inspired by a novel by Ladislav Fuks, creates an atmosphere of paralytic fear and despair that verges on the hallucinatory and has an unshakable psychological impact upon the viewer. At the center of this escalating nightmare is a middle-aged businessman (Wladyslaw Kowalski), a figure of determined strength and dignity.
