RADIO SPREADS WORD, ‘WORLD’

What a Salt Lake City country-and-Western station began two weeks ago as a regional drive to have the USA for Africa charity hit, “We Are the World,” played on all Utah stations simultaneously, has snowballed into a national effort.

All 42 Salt Lake City stations, with the exception of the beautiful-music and all-news or talk stations, have promised to abandon their formats for 6 minutes and 22 seconds on Good Friday, according to Jim Mickelson, program director for KZAN, and he is now expanding his drive to the other 9,000 AM and FM outlets in the United States.

In Los Angeles he got a commitment from KIIS-FM (102.7) to play the song at 7:50 a.m. on Good Friday, and asked management to spread the word to other L.A. stations.
