A low-fat diet can reduce the risk of heart disease in men by more than 50%, a two-nation study published in the New England Journal of Medicine said Thursday.

The survey of men in Ireland and their brothers living in Boston found also that, although the Irish had a lower rate of heart disease 20 years ago, they have caught up with the Americans.

A second study from the Netherlands found that persons who already have heart disease can stop its progress by eating a vegetarian diet low in cholesterol.
