2 Brothers Held in Crime Spree in Southwest L.A.

Two South Los Angeles brothers--one already charged with the rape and murder of two women--were charged Friday with a series of burglaries, robberies, rapes and sexual assaults in connection with a yearlong crime spree in Southwest Los Angeles.

Kevin Haley, 21, and Reginald Haley, 24, will be arraigned Monday on a total of 42 felony counts, Deputy Dist. Atty. Steven Barshop said. The charges involve 24 victims and a series of crimes committed from August, 1983, to August, 1984.

The charges against Reginald Haley include four counts of robbery, two of burglary, two of rape, two of sodomy, two of oral copulation, two of sexual assault, one of kidnaping and one of auto theft. Kevin Haley is charged with 13 burglaries, one robbery, one attempted rape and one oral copulation. Together, the brothers are charged with six robberies, two kidnapings, one rape and one sodomy.

Hearing Due

Kevin Haley was charged last November with the strangulation murder in September of Dolores Clement, 55, and the beating death last June of La Vern Stolzy, 56. Police say he sexually assaulted and killed both women while burglarizing their Southwest Los Angeles homes. A preliminary hearing in those cases will be set next week, Barshop said.

Reginald Haley also faces trial on burglary and drug charges in an unrelated case, Barshop said.

Barshop called the two brothers “hot prowl burglars,” who broke into occupied homes at night and often attacked the occupants after burglarizing their homes. They were arrested last fall after Wilshire Division detectives turned up evidence linking Kevin Haley to the murders of Clement and Stolzy. Police said the brothers stole to support their cocaine habits, sometimes working together and sometimes alone.
