A plan that would have allowed some development of Big Sur’s El Sur Ranch was rejected by the California Coastal Commission. In the face of strong opposition from Big Sur residents, the commission voted 10 to 0 to turn down the development agreement negotiated between ranch owner James Hill and Monterey County and approved by the county Board of Supervisors late last year. El Sur Ranch attorney George Walker said after the vote that he was uncertain what the Hill family will do now. Development plans called for a 100-room hotel, a restaurant and as many as 41 homes.
