Cypriot President Spyros Kyprianou rejected as unconstitutional a second demand by Parliament that he resign for his handling of peace talks with Turkish Cypriots, who occupy 37% of the island shared with Greek Cypriots. The latest demand backed a Feb. 22 call for Kyprianou’s resignation that was approved by the two main Greek Cypriot political parties. Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had accepted a preliminary draft peace agreement prepared through efforts by U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar. Kyprianou has demanded clarification of details in the agreement.
