Off the Mark
The cartoon by Conrad (March 24), equating the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan with the Reagan Administration’s help to the contras in Nicaragua, is way off of the mark.
The help to the contras is stupid, immoral, and is opposed by most of Congress as well as the American people. It is also minuscule compared to the massive invasion of Afghanistan by Russian army units complete with planes, tanks and armored helicopters. Millions of Afghan civilians have fled to Pakistan and Iran to escape the Soviet fire.
The comparative puny efforts by Reagan’s contras are doomed to failure against the highly militarized Sandinistas. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the largely abandoned Afghans.
