Gen. John W. Vessey Jr., chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, arrived here Sunday at the head of an American military delegation on an official visit to Yugoslavia.

He was welcomed by the Yugoslav military chief of staff, Gen. Petar Gracanin, the national news agency Tanjug reported.

Vessey will meet with senior military officials and will tour some units of the Yugoslav armed forces, Tanjug said.

Quoting informed sources, the agency reported from Bucharest on Friday that Vessey had made an official visit to the Romanian armed forces last week. Tanjug said he was the highest-ranking American military officer to visit a Warsaw Pact country since World War II.

Nonaligned Yugoslavia has friendly ties with the United States, and the two countries’ armed forces maintain regular contact.
