Bernard Sanders, the nation’s only socialist mayor, was sworn in for his third term in Burlington, Vt. Sanders, 43, who runs as an independent, won reelection March 5 with a landslide victory over former Democratic Lt. Gov. Brian Burns and five other candidates. During his reelection campaign, Sanders did not focus on his political philosophy. He concentrated instead on plans to improve city streets and to promote “people-oriented” waterfront development. Under his leadership in the last six months, however, aldermen have passed resolutions establishing a sister-city relationship with Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, and protesting Reagan Administration policies.
