In a solemn ritual symbolic of the first Easter, Pope John Paul II washed the feet of 12 priests--a re-enactment of the Last Supper--and led more than a thousands others in a renewal of their vows of celibacy. The pontiff began four days of Easter observances at St. Peter’s Basilica, joining 10 cardinals, 50 archbishops and bishops in celebrating Mass.
