Ecuador Airlifts 30 Tortoises to Safety
From Reuters
QUITO, Ecuador —
Helicopters have lifted 30 giant Galapagos tortoises to safety from an island breeding site threatened by fire, official sources said.
They said the tortoises, 25 of them female, and several eggs were moved four miles to an area safe from the fire, which has been burning on the main Galapagos island of Isabela for more than a month.
The blaze, believed to have started from a hunter’s campfire, has fed on vegetation dried out by a drought.
