Two persons were killed when their small foreign sedan collided with a tanker truck carrying 8,000 gallons of gasoline, setting off a 100-foot-high fireball which enveloped the car in Thousand Oaks Thursday night.
The occupants of the car were burned beyond recognition and the truck driver suffered second-degree burns over 18% of his body, Ventura County fire dispatcher Sam Meier said. Ms. Meier said there was an initial explosion but the collision occurred alongside a concrete ditch that contained the flames and protected nearby dwellings.
The truck driver was not immediately identified.
Cause of the collision along U.S. 101 near Rancho Conejo Road was under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
