Drivers in two of six 1985 cars tested probably would have suffered death or serious head and chest injuries in a head-on crash at 35 m.p.h., the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported. It said both the two-door Renault Alliance convertible and the Chevrolet Astro van offered less-than-desirable crash protection in the tests. Three four-door sedans, the Mitsubishi Galant, Plymouth Caravelle and Plymouth Reliant, did not indicate a likelihood of serious head, chest or leg injuries, while the four-door Volkswagen Jetta was below the serious injury threshold in all categories except for head injury to the passenger-side occupant.
