A supermarket chain began pulling 2% milk off its shelves today after reports that a second batch of milk from one of its dairies may be responsible for new cases of salmonella poisoning.

Spokesman Bill Newby said Jewel Cos. also is asking customers to return unopened cartons of 2% milk for testing by the state Health Department.

State health officials today began investigating the possibility of a second outbreak linked to Hillfarm, the dairy that processed a batch of milk blamed last week for sickening more than 2,000 people in five states.

Seven people suffering symptoms of salmonella poisoning were admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital in suburban Downers Grove on Monday. Three of the patients reported they drank Hillfarm 2% milk.
