RCA said Thursday that it will lease space on one of its new satellites to U.S. Satellite Broadcasting of Minneapolis in a deal that could be worth up to $300 million.

RCA said U.S. Satellite agreed to lease four transponders, or channels, on the satellite for $85 million. U.S. Satellite also has the right of first refusal to lease another six transponders.

RCA’s new satellite, called Satcom K-2, has a total of 16 channels and is scheduled to be launched in December. RCA plans to launch two other satellites, one in November and the other in 1987.

“These spacecraft will be the most powerful domestic communications satellites in service following their launch,” said Eugene F. Murphy, chairman of RCA Communications.

One of RCA’s key interests in the Satcom K-2 satellite is its ability to transmit syndicated, non-network television programs to TV stations. Instead of having the videotaped programs shipped by mail or air freight, the stations could receive the programs directly from the syndicator via satellite.

RCA plans to offer any commercial TV station an Earth-station receiving dish free of charge as an incentive to use the satellite for receiving syndicated programs.
