Volkswagen of America Inc. has recalled 48,000 U.S.-made cars because of problems with carburetors and seat belts, the auto maker announced.

VW said Thursday that 25,000 Rabbits from the 1984 model year have carburetor throttle-shaft defects that may cause the engine to race uncontrollably. The other recall covers 23,000 new Golfs, the subcompact car that replaced the Rabbit for the 1985 model year.
