Wagner, Master Chorale to Be Honored at Party

Stepping out in style and stepping back in time. That’s the Los Angeles Master Chorale’s modus operandi for an evening of nostalgia, chance and some excitement next Sunday at Universal City.

The night will be orchestrated in ‘30s style, giving partygoers the option of conventional black-tie or “nostalgia apparel.”

Clifford A. Miller is chairman of the chorale’s board of directors, and the night honors the chorale and its founder and music director, Roger Wagner.

Co-chairmen of the benefit committee are Charmay B. Allred, Mrs. James McCaffery and Mrs. David Shultz. Committee members include William A. Ewing, Stephen F. Harbison, Abbott L. Brown, Mrs. Harrison A. Price, Steven B. Brown, Nicholas England, Warner W. Henry, Dr. Louis W. Kang, Mrs. Albin C. Koch, Mrs. Charles I. Schneider, Mrs. S. J. Stathatos, Mrs. Larry B. Thrall, Maureen Wright, Robert Willoughby Jones and Tania McKnight.

On election day in Los Angeles last week, Pitzer College had some political activity of its own. Pitzer President Frank L. Ellsworth and Eli Broad, dinner chairman, brought in Frank J. Fahrenkopf Jr., chairman of the Republican National Committee, and Charles T. Manatt, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, for a little dialogue.

About 300 attended the college’s 11th annual National Issues Forum at the Beverly Wilshire.

The night also had a great cause: scholarships.

In the audience were Kitty and Stephen Moses and Pat (he has a big birthday coming) and Bernice Brown. Manatt had the fun of announcing that attorney Maria Hummer (she was co-dinner chairman with Moses) and George McCambridge plan to wed.

Five unique gardens, including the enchanting French country cottage grounds of actress Cloris Leachman, a neighbor of chairman Helen Neville, are on the Santa Monica Bay Auxiliary to Childrens Hospital garden tour today. Also on the tour is the historic estate, Rancho Boca de Santa Monica, a stagecoach stop in the 1890s for sun lovers en route to bathhouses on the Santa Monica beach.

Bette Midler, Deniece Williams, Jane Seymour, Rae Dawn Chong and JoBeth Williams modeled Holly Harp fashions at the benefit fashion show Thursday in the Crystal Room of the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Funds go to an arts festival to be held in Los Angeles this summer commemorating the 40th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The event was sponsored by the Hollywood Women’s Coalition in association with the Interfaith Center to Reverse the Arms Race.

David Price, chairman of the board of American Golf Corp., presented singer Johnny Mathis with $35,000 for the Children’s Home Society of Los Angeles, at the Los Angeles Press Club.

The funds were donated by American Golf Corp., Wisdom Imports (Carta Blanca Beer), Atlantic Richfield and Freemont Insurance, sponsors of the recent Johnny Mathis Carta Blanca Seniors PGA Golf Classic at MountainGate Country Club in Bel-Air, and included proceeds from the pre-tourney benefit at the Century Plaza.

Minority dental students benefit today from the Auxiliary to the Angel City Dental Society Madhatters luncheon and fashion show at the Beverly Hilton.

The show highlights black fashion designers.

Last year’s show provided $10,000 in scholarships and deposited $4,000 into revolving loan funds at two universities.
