Fog Creeps In to Keep Beaches Cool as Sun Bakes Inland Areas

Share

Beachgoers seeking a repeat of Saturday’s summer-like temperatures were disappointed Sunday as fog socked in Los Angeles County beaches and blocked the sunshine that baked inland areas.

In the San Fernando Valley, the high was 89. The downtown high was 83, considerably cooler than it was Saturday, when a high-pressure system pushed temperatures to 93 at the Civic Center.

Lifeguards estimated county beach crowds at 560,000 on Sunday and said that by mid-afternoon, would-be sunbathers were abandoning the beaches as dense fog reduced visibility to half a mile and temperatures hovered between the high 60s and low 70s.

The National Weather Service attributed Sunday’s cooling trend to the eastward movement of the high-pressure system. Forecasters predicted a repeat of Sunday’s weather through Tuesday.

High temperatures today are expected to be in the low 80s in inland areas and near 70 at the beaches. Lows are forecast in the 50s.
