Local News in Brief : Volunteer Program to Aid Victims of Crime
A new community-based volunteer program designed to assist victims of crime has been announced by Ventura County Dist. Atty. Michael Bradbury.
The program, called Community Victim Support, will be operated by the district attorney’s victim/witness assistance division, Bradbury said.
“We want to sensitize the public to the rights of those who suffered direct and indirect consequences of crime,” Bradbury said.
He said that in the last three months of 1984 the victim/witness division responded to more than 58,000 requests for services or information.
Richard Harris, director of the division, said the program will seek to establish a countywide network of volunteers who will assist victims in their neighborhoods.
The public is invited to an orientation meeting tonight at 7 at Poinsettia Elementary School, 350 N. Victoria Ave., in Ventura.
“Within the next three years, we plan to have chapters throughout the county,” Harris said.
Each volunteer will be given a minimum of nine hours of instruction on such topics as domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, witness services and criminal justice procedures.
