Local News in Brief : Camarillo Officials to Study Youth Camp

Share

The Camarillo City Council has decided to send city officials to review a California Youth Authority conservation camp in Paso Robles before approving a proposed camp on the city’s border with Oxnard.

The proposed camp would be on the grounds of the authority’s Ventura School, which has male and female wards.

The proposal includes building a 100-bed facility to accommodate camp residents working in crews for various public services, including fire and flood control, trail construction and beach maintenance, youth authority officials said.

Ventura School Supt. Clyde McDowell, who will supervise the conservation camp, told the City Council last week that only minor offenders and inmates who are near the end of their sentences and have been carefully screened will be allowed in the program.

McDowell said that Ventura County has a great need for additional firefighting services. Don Ellis, Ventura County assistant fire chief, agreed, saying the camp crews would provide valuable assistance to local firefighters.
