An Israeli sailor injured in a fire aboard a merchant ship 560 miles off the California coast was rescued by paramedics who parachuted into the ocean, went aboard the ship and flew with him aboard a helicopter to San Francisco, authorities said. Pinchas Deri, 35, was reported in stable condition with second-degree burns over 25% of his body, said Air National Guard Lt. Charles Cross. The man was to be taken to St. Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco. Deri was injured after using kerosene to ignite a charcoal fire aboard the 718-foot, Liberian-registered merchant vessel Beer Sheva, Cross said. The ship was en route from Long Beach to Korea.
