About 170 teachers in the Charter Oak Unified School District walked off their jobs Tuesday in an effort to break a yearlong deadlock in contract negotiations. They returned to work Wednesday. A spokesman for the Charter Oak Teachers Assn. said that roughly 70% of the district’s 260 teachers went on strike and threaten to do so again if no settlement is reached in the renegotiation of their three-year contract that expires in June.

The spokesman said the instructors are asking for a 7.25% salary increase retroactive to Sept. 1, 1984. The district’s most recent offer is a 6.25% increase retroactive to Feb. 1 of this year. Negotiations resumed Wednesday, the spokesman said. According to a Los Angeles County Office of Education salary report last year, the maximum starting salary at Charter Oak for teachers is $21,509, ranking 42nd among starting salaries paid by the county’s 43 unified school districts.
